The story of bottled water: manufactured demand

The best 8 minutes you’ll spend this week (well, at work anyhow…)

The Story of Bottled Water, released on March 22, 2010 (World Water Day) employs the Story of Stuff style to tell the story of manufactured demand—how you get Americans to buy more than half a billion bottles of water every week when it already flows from the tap. Over five minutes, the film explores the bottled water industrys attacks on tap water and its use of seductive, environmental-themed advertising to cover up the mountains of plastic waste it produces. The film concludes with a call to take back the tap, not only by making a personal commitment to avoid bottled water, but by supporting investments in clean, available tap water for all.

  1. OK, this is a cute film. I agree and it makes sense in America. But in Brisbane?! Would Queensland tap water really win a taste test over bottled water? And isn’t the tap water here slightly 3rd world? (in terms of its clarity and what it does to your stomach?)

Seriously though, in America, Canada, much of Europe, bottled water is dumb. But in most the world it is a necessity. Isn’t this shocking! Most the world’s nations cannot even deliver clean drinking water.
